宁波位于中国大陆海岸线中段、经济发达的长江三角洲南翼，毗邻上海、杭州。宁波是中国对外开放城市、享有省一级经济管理权限的计划单列城市、具有制定地方性法规权力的“全国较大的市”，是全国历史文化名城。全市总面积9365平方公里，总人口550万。全市辖象山、宁海二个县，余姚、慈溪、奉化三个县级市。市区设海曙、江东、江北、镇海、北仑、鄞州六个区和东钱湖旅游度假区。

　　宁波历史悠久，是有7000年文明史的河姆渡文化的发祥地，自古以来就是中国对外贸易的重要港口。宁波在唐时与扬州、广州并称为中国三大对外贸易港口，宋时又与广州、泉州同列为对外贸易的三大港口重镇，鸦片战争后被辟为“五口通商”口岸之一。宁波港目前是中国最重要的港口之一。2004年，港口货物吞吐量2.2亿吨，名列中国大陆港口第二位，集装箱吞吐量达400.5万标准箱。

宁波具有发展经济的良好条件，改革开放以来，全市经济和社会得到了快速发展。2004年，全市国内生产总值2158.04亿元，人均国内生产总值3400美元，财政收入400.9亿元，市区居民人均可支配收入15882元，农民人均纯收入7018元。目前，宁波是中国华东地区重要工业城市和对外贸易口岸，是长江三角洲区域中心城市和重化工业基地，是浙江省经济中心。
